Take Action Now!

Congratulations. Now that you've decided to become a Conscientious Objector, there are a few steps that you need to take to begin developing your CO file:

1. Learn about your Selective Service registration choices
Please review our Selective Service registration choices page first!

2. Register Online As A Conscientious Objector

By registering, you will help to establish a date for your "point of clarity." In addition to adding your name to our secure database of registered Conscientious Objectors, you will receive a "Declaration of Conscientious Objection" that you can print and notarize.

Also, many traditional peace churches and religious organizations have registries. Download the Center on Conscience and War's Conscientious Objectors and the Draft (PDF - see page 17) for a comprehensive list.

3. Download Documentation and Tools

The following items are available to download and add to your CO file:

4. Build Your Case

Building a solid CO file that demonstrates your sincere commitment to your core beliefs is key to gaining status as a Conscientious Objector. We've compiled a list of items that you should include, as well as some ideas for additional action.

5. Ways To Get Involved

There are many ways for you to get involved and demonstrate your commitment to your CO beliefs. We've listed a few ideas below and will be adding more interactive tools soon to assist you in your efforts:

  1. Tell others about your point of clarity, how to declare yourself a CO, and the many online resources and registries, including PointOfClarity.org.

  2. Support and volunteer with local peace, counter-military recruitment, anti-war and CO effort.

  3. Download and distribute the Declaration of Conscientious Objection or the Activist Toolkit for School Demilitarization.

  4. Volunteer your time and talent to Point of Clarity when you register online as a conscientious objector, or contact one of the many peace organizations listed on our Resources page.

  5. Write a letter to the editor of your local daily or weekly newspaper explaining the options available to COs.

  6. Design and post your own artwork that reflects your CO beliefs.

  7. Give your Congresspeople a monthly wake-up call; let them know where you stand, and find out where they stand on the draft.

  8. Call your favorite talk radio show and share your concerns.
Here are a few links to help you get started:

Find your local Air America radio station
Find talk shows in the U.S.
Find other radio stations in the U.S.

  9. Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper about the current troop situation, your feelings about the potential for a draft, or your thoughts about being a CO.

  10. Write an op-ed for your local newspaper about Point of Clarity and other CO information in response to information about troops, recruitment or other military issues.

  11. Go to peace activities in your community, i.e., meetings, lectures, forums, marches, demonstrations, rallies, and other events.

  12. Forward this site to a friend(s).

  13. Participate in a local/regional meet-up. When others in your local area register, we'll send emails to everyone in that zip code area to see if they would like to meet up at a local coffee shop, restaurant, or someplace neutral. If people connect at the first meet-up and want to meet up again for support or to organize in their area, then we can help facilitate the next meet-up.

  14. Create a Point of Clarity or CO chapter and begin to organize locally.

  15. Become a Point of Clarity or CO outreach contact person.

  16. Volunteer to talk to others in your community, schools, peace clubs and organizations, other nonprofit groups, churches, neighborhood groups, or anywhere that youth or parents congregate.

  17. Be a Point of Clarity leader in your neighborhood, church, or school. Contact us if you'd like our support and guidance to help accomplish any of these goals.

  18. If the draft is called, check out the Point of Clarity website for information about what actions can you take.

Participate in as many peace actions as possible. Help your local/regional peace action organizations or churches. Verify your participation in any of these activities with a photo or video, or any other reasonable method.

Document everything that you do regarding your personal, ethical and moral beliefs about peace. The more involved you are with peace activities, the more you will have to document your beliefs and your activities. Subsequently, you will have more information to build your personal file. Consequently, should you ever need to go before the local draft board, your file will be ready and filled with proof of your beliefs.

Although becoming active and building your CO file is not a guarantee of receiving conscientious objector status from your local draft board, these are the most important actions that you can take to protect yourself from being forced into a circumstance that goes against your personal beliefs.

If you would like to suggest additional ways for CO's to get involved, please send your ideas to support@pointofclarity.org.
